Preserved History

Rescued to preserve local architectural character, featuring bright, homey interiors filled with antique details and authentic charm.

Like-Minded Neighbors

As long-time local environmentalists living right next door, we keep the property maintained, peaceful, and well cared for while respecting your privacy.

Restful Atmosphere

A quiet, low-key space tailored for mindful living, restful retreats, and temporary or extended stays.

ABOUT US

We would be your vegetarian and dedicated environmentalist neighbors, Gary and Cara. We bought the house in 2001 to make sure it would not be demolished, the fate of so many old houses in this development-frenzied city, to build another hideous townhouse complex or soulless mega-box. The interior was changed to be bright and cheerful, with vintage and antique furnishings to give it a homey atmosphere.

We live in an equally small house next door and decided that rather than rent Haskell’s house in its entirety, we’d keep one room for visiting friends or family and make one available for other like-minded people to use for a temporary, or for the right person, longer-term home. We also have belongings and provisions stored there.

MEET HASKELL

The house is named in honor of Haskell, our large cat who, after we bought the property, decided it was his alone and moved there from our house. He spent his days in the garden and slept on the porch until he passed on.

A PLACE TO SLOW DOWN

We look for people who will appreciate the house’s laid-back feeling, quirky period charm, and the way we’ve set it up to embody and foster environmental responsibility. We believe it’s the perfect place for a quiet, restful, low-key stay.

Because we live right next door, it’s especially important to have an atmosphere and energy created by content, appreciative people. We hope many wonderful people will enjoy the house!

What Our Extended-Stay Guests Say

My monthlong stay was wonderful, quiet, and relaxing, exactly what I was looking for, with beautiful trees and vegetation that provided privacy and made the home feel like a native plant garden filled with fresh air. The great neighborhood, nearby parks, beach, downtown, and restaurants, along with Cara and Gary’s thoughtful hospitality, made it a place I would happily recommend and stay at again.

I have stayed at this house a few times, and have had a very good experience each time. The house is private, comfortable, and clean. I enjoy staying in places that are environmentally responsible and also places that prefer to use natural and fragrance free products, which was one of the reasons I stayed here the first time. This house did not disappoint. The hosts are accommodating and friendly and are passionate about vegan/vegetarian lifestyles and care very much for the environment. Two thumbs up!!!
