Although not old by most standards, for South Florida this is an old house, built in the 1930s and moved to its present location. The floors are made of now unavailable Dade County Pine and the rooms are painted in restful colors. High ceilings in most rooms give the small house a feeling of spaciousness.

Vegetarian/vegans will be happy to know flesh is not permitted in the house. No need to worry about prior guests leaving meat residues on these pots and dishes!

If you have pesticide sensitivities please note that no sprays have been used in the house for the past twelve years. Windows are usually open so the air is fresh.

Our house is "green" in that paint and other materials used by us to restore it are almost exclusively low/no VOC, and we clean with natural, biodegradable, unscented products. Sheets are all cotton and beds have quilts and (rescued) down/feather duvets. Floors are bare except for minimal rugs. We keep the windows open almost year round.

The front yard has been planted to provide habitat and food for wildlife. Butterflies and birds frequent the plants for nectar, foliage, berries, and a safe haven. The dense plantings provide privacy for the house.

We require that occupants join us in living lightly on the planet by conserving electricity and water and by composting kitchen waste and recycling. All applicable containers are provided to make this easy. With the windows open the house is very cool and comfortable, and there are ceiling fans throughout. Due to our environmental bias, we hope guests will enjoy the fresh breezes, but window air conditioners for bedrooms are available on request from June to November. In cold weather, space heaters are provided. We also provide flannel sheets and warm duvets and blankets.

The house does NOT have a fax, television, or Wi-Fi. No Wi-Fi allowed, including hot spots, but there is high-speed DSL in the rooms. Wireless internet is also within walking distance, as is the library where computers are available. We really encourage you to use your time in the house to slow down and enjoy the wonderful South Florida climate. Take a break from all the intrusive and stress-producing "modern conveniences" and experience a restful, slower-paced way of life!
